HISTORY OF OUR WOOD
This lumber is trimmed from massive hand-hewn logs salvaged from an old cabin in Wisconsin. Amish crews disassemble barns and cabins to salvage as much as they can. The Amish then saw off the edges of the beams and logs for us. We straighten, plane and sand them to about 1 3/4" thick. Early settlers to the upper midwest built shelter from the most available things they had - trees and muscles. These structures were labors of love and necessity. Most of these barns were in use for over 100 years before being obsolesced by modern farming practices. They saw farming change from horse power to diesel power. As the culture changed so too do the buildings that support it. This wood was cut from old growth trees in the 19th century by hand saw and ax then shaped by hand with adzes and muscles. I try to present as much of that old effort as I can in the top and edge surfaces of each table. The wood in these boards must be as old as this country. With a magnifying glass I have counted more than 140 growth rings on some of these pieces.
